Re: Breast cancerFrom: Andrew Folley (agfolley@hotmail.com)Fri Oct 28 12:39:43 2005
Gail Sorry to hear abot mom. I will try to give some simple answers to your questions. Invasive ductal ca is common about 5-10% of all breast cancers. It is harder to detetect on mammogram as it does not always form a "lump" and odes not always have the typical calcificaition patternof typical ca such invasive ductal. Any node involvement is a more concerning sign and lowers prognosis. She is probalby a stage 3 out of 4 with the positive nodes. Good news is that it must have been estroge positive if they are giving her arimidex. That is a good sign in general. Arimidex may be slightly better in preventing recurrence thatn tamoxifen. They both work to block estrogen stimulation of cancer cells in postmenopausa; women. Jsut different mechanisms by which they do it. Arimidex blocks the "aromatase" action of androgens being converted to estrogens. Life threatening challenges such as this are a good time to ask your mom and ourselves if our eternal distiny is secure. andy

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
