Yes - Internist or Endocrinologist - need to exclude non-hypoestrogenic causes of bone loss (also applies to postmenopausal Patients with Z scores under -2.0). /tj

37 YO who is 6 months PP had bone density screening somewhere on her wrist, and was told it was low. She then had a full DEXA showing osteopenia (my partner attended to this). He recommended a biphosphonate. She is bottle feeding and never breast fed.

She then called for my opinion.

My opinion is that I'm not so sure about pre-menopausal DEXAs, and she needs an evaluation (see the internist/endocrinologist) first.

Opinions welcome.

Garry

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
