Re: 5 hour GTTFrom: Atkinson, Samuel M (ATKINSONS@mail.ecu.edu)Tue Aug 2 15:27:27 2005
Richard. It is my observation and understanding that reactive hypoglycemia is a result of a high carbohydrate load followed by a somewhat inappropriate insulin release causing hypoglycemia. Many consider it a disorder of insulin regulation and a precursor to insulin resistance and subsequent Type II diabetes. The treatment is not more carbs but more protein-breakfast,lunch, dinner and HS. I suspect the new Byetta from Lilly or Symlin from Amylin might help if she can tolerate the initial nausea and the injections. She may not have insulin resistance yet but she will. Of course neither of these two drugs carry any clearance for pregnancy so try the high protein diet. The Atkins people (HIGH CARB diet) declared bankruptcy yesterday. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
