Doesn't sound puritanical or provincial to me. I also have to wonder about fathers-in-law and brothers-in-law, although I remember one really wonderful birth...

The brother-in-law provided the ride to the hospital. He hadn't intended to be at the birth, nor had the couple planned to have him there. The woman, a primip, progressed quickly and he just never got around to leaving. She was a very active birther, ended up doing a lot of squatting on the bed, with her husband supporting her on one side and the brother-in-law on the other side. The brother-in-law was incredibly moved by the entire experience and in obvious awe of her power. I found myself thinking that the future mother of his children (he was unmarried but lived with a girlfriend) was going to find herself with a very tough act to follow.

But I have to agree with you. The presence of close male relatives has enough of a suggestion of incest to make me a little uncomfortable, too. Then I try to tell myself that it is what I'm reading in, not necessarily what is truly there, and that different families may have very different values and mores than I do, and that it's their intimate life experience, not mine.
