Examining attitudes and practices surrounding personal HRT use among postmenopausal female gynecologists in Brazil. The majority of postmenopausal female gynecologists in Brazil use HRT, say researchers who think these women may be adversely influencing treatment uptake among their patients. Alberto Filho and co-workers, from Rua Dr. Diogo de Faria in São Paulo, used a mailed survey to assess attitudes and practices surrounding personal use of HRT among 755 postmenopausal female gynecologists, affiliated with the Brazilian Federation of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Of these women, 47 percent had undergone a hysterectomy and were aged over 50 years of age or had had both ovaries removed. With 61.1 percent of participants reporting current and 10.3 percent describing prior use, HRT use was high, particularly in the fifth decade, explain Filho et al. The main reasons quoted for such use were treatment of vasomotor symptoms or osteoporosis, or the prevention of cardiovascular disease, while de terrents included family histories of breast cancer or smoking. Participants with an intact uterus showed a preference for combined estrogen/progestin therapy. In summary, "Brazilian postmenopausal gynecologists engage in a high frequency of HRT use," says the team. "This may be a public health concern because of their possible influence on the Brazilian population." *****************************************************************************=20 Robert Modugno MD MBA FACOG=20
