Now how on earth did we and the women achieve that? Anyone care to offer any reasons why?

I can only think it is pure luck Gail. How can any woman possibly give birth without a doctor? I would hazzard a guess that your women are uncontrolled all over the room, refusing to stay on the bed - and not adopting convenient positions from where you can see the perineum. I also bet you dont use oxytocin for all your 3rd stages. It is of course a matter of time untill you realise that allowing women to do all this is putting their lives severely at risk, and very soon you will be begging for a lovely doctor to come and save all these women from childbirth.

A different view - sadly there are huge differences in the way we can practice in the UK and over here in N. America. Some of it is litigation - in fact a lot of it - and this means doctors often practice defensive medicine - not always what they would concider the best route to take. There are doctors on this list who show a huge amount of empathy and understanding, and who do push the boundries. They must live on high levels of adrenaline. But also a cultural difference in the women. I have been astounded by women who just walk through the doors and submit to anything thats asked of them. They question less and have a reverence for doctors remenisent of how my grandmother saw drs. When offered choices they look shocked and often just ask what you would do. So in defence of *some* of the Drs here - both litigation and culture make a lot of the comments here alien to the way we are used to thinking. In the UK it wasnt until women started sticking up for themselves that the climate changed, and we got to a place where womens choice is respected (mostly), and even if she were to choose a birth that we would concider dangerous or foolhardy - she has the right to be provided with a carer who will support her. I cant see that ever happening here.

As to how El thinks - well goodness knows where that comes from ;-) Jane

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
