Re: Pitocin and epidural

A consultant anaesthetist I know says that there is no evidence to support switching syntocinon off before attempting to site an epidural. He prefers it to be turned off to ensure the mother can keep still during the siting of the epidural and noting more. As soon as it's sited it can be turned back on but at half the rate it was before it was switched off. We don't have to start again.

That is why I offered no evidence cos there ain't none. And I reiterate that it is the choice of the woman and I will defend that statement. It's always the woman's choice as to do anything when she has declined any treatment is assault and can and should be a police matter as it would be if she was assaulted on the street or in her home!

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
