Pitocin and epiduralFrom: Dr. Ainsworth (ainsron@sbcglobal.net)Tue May 31 13:43:35 2005
One of our anesthesiologists recently began requiring that pitocin be turned off prior to placement of an epidural and not restarted until 30 minutes after onset of analgesia due to risk of hypertonic contractions and fetal bradycardia. Does anyone have any references to support that practice? To me, it seems like a waste of time, as many of these patients are on pitocin at maximal doses and to have to restart it and go back up per protocol is time-consuming.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
