Re: Hypertension Therapy/Breastfeeding MomFrom: Anna Meenan, MD (annam@uic.edu)Thu May 19 18:50:29 2005
>From Clinical Therapy in Breastfeeding Patients by Thomas Hale: Diuretics recommended as first line therapy, followed by ß-blockers if there are no asthma issues. All ß-blockers are approved by the AAP for use in breastfeeding, but metoprolol or labetolol are preferred. If ß-blockers contraindicated, probably the next choice would be hydralazine. Avoid ACE-I's during the first month. Neonates are very sensitive. After the first month, captopril preferred if ACE-I used.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
