According to the California Sweet Success Guidelines: "Instruct patients to "eat normally" for at least three days. There are no specific pre-fast diet recommendations, since most healthy women consume an adequate amount (>150 gm) of CHO." If that's the case, if they all eat normally, why do we have to say eat normally for three days, seems redundant. In fact, I usually just give them the order with only the instruction to fast overnight before the test.

I've also heard others recommend eating a Hershey bar daily for the three days before the test, in order to assure adequate CHO.

Do any of you guys have a handout that tells people about how to eat the 150 grams of carbs/day on the days prior to a 3 hour GTT?

Please post or email privately.

Thanks,

Garry

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
