In family medicine, I see a fair amount of this in other contexts. I have adopted a narcotic contract for use in my office. I will not prescribe narcotics for more than two weeks unless the patient signs one. Incidentally, my orthopedic surgeon had me sign one the first time I came to his office for a consult, before he had ever prescribed anything for me. What it says if you haven't seen one is that the patient agrees to have meds prescribed by only one doc, will not call for early refills, will always give 24-hour notice for refills, will not call at night or on weekends for refills, will only fill Rx at one pharmacy, and gives permission for us to discuss their refill pattern with that pharmacist or any other pharmacist if we feel the need to, will submit to random drug testing to check for multi-drug abuse or diversion, and understands that we will discharge them from the practice immediately if they violate any article of the contract. Most abusers will walk out the door when they see the contract and that's fine with me. In the small town that I practice in, I think the word is out on the street that Dr. Meenan is not the one to go to if you want narcotics, so I am seeing less of it, or maybe they're just getting their narcotics via the internet. I seldom prescribe narcotics in pregnancy.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
