Bowel obstruction in pregnancyFrom: Dr. Rupak Ranjan Roy (rupakroy@vsnl.com)Fri Oct 29 12:45:26 2004
Planning to perform a laparotomy on a 28 weeker with small bowel obstruction tomorrow. She has been referred from elsewhere with a two week history of upper abdominal pain, vomiting and abdominal distension. Was being treated conservatively there. X-ray shows multiple fluid levels. Has history of appendicectomy and right ovarian cystectomy one year ago. Surgeon has seen her. Not much doubt about the diagnosis. I was just wondering about the suture material to use for the rectus sheath (opened by a vertical incision). Are non-absorbables likely to cause problems as the uterus grows? Secondly, do you use tocolytics? Dr. Rupak Ranjan Roy MRCOG

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
