Re: ABCNEWS.com: Are Most Hysterectomies Unnecessary?From: Larry Glazerman (l.glazerman@rcn.com)Sun Aug 29 16:14:13 2004
Unfortunately, the part of the story that was the most valuable, namely, presenting options to patients, was lost in the hype and sensationalism of the story. I offer ALL of my patients with fibroids ALL of the following options: 1. Do nothing 2. Attempt to control bleeding hormonally 3. UAE 4. Myomectomy 5. Hysterectomy (supracervical or total, with or without BSO, depending on the situation) Regarding the UAE data, I also tell them that it's only been done for less than 10 years, and we don't know long term data. Some patients choose UAE, more of them choose hysterectomy, usually LSH in my hands. FWIW, I also get quite a few patients who come to me for second opinions, saying "I have fibroids and my doctor told me I need a hysterectomy." I wish I had a nickel for every patient who, after I discuss all the options, says to me "I want you to just take it out."

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
