Re: UAE OptionFrom: Braun, R. Daniel (rbraun@iupui.edu)Thu Aug 26 06:59:32 2004
About half of my vag hysts go home same day with T-3's. R. Daniel Braun, MD "If everyone likes you, you're doing something wrong." Kinky Friedman I believe a self-righteous liberal or conservative with a cause is more dangerous than a Hell's Angel with an attitude. Andy Rooney -----Original Message----- From: ob-gyn-l@obgyn.net [mailto:ob-gyn-l@obgyn.net] On Behalf Of Joanne Bulley, MD Sent: Wednesday, August 25, 2004 4:54 PM To: Multiple recipients of list OB-GYN-L Subject: Re: UAE Option For those with fibroids - I nearly always review it. I discuss it as one of the options for those with symptomatic fibroids. So far it has been a big pain in the postierior working with the insurance companies - then having to educate the PCP about it - because it is the PCP who has to make the actual referral. Dosen't make sense that the PCP who has no way to judge whether the woman should have any procedure done - much less who should be a candidate for the UAE is the one who has to sign on to the recommendations... I certainly don't recommend it for all who are approaching hysterectomy. My impression is that it is a huge deal to go through with the UAE. There is the MRI she has to get (with the claustrophobic experience and the big bucks) - then the consult (for big bucks) - then the actual catheterization and treatment (for really big bucks). Then a night in the hospital with an epidrual for pain. Then the ride home nearly immediately after the epidural is removed - and given a prescription for pain meds to get when home -- meanwhile there is the 1-2 hour ride home with no drugs on board! But ... the few patients I have had go through that ... were glad to have avoided that nasty hysterectomy. Perasonally, my hysterectomy (abdominal at that) was easier to get through than what my patients described to me about the UAE! Joanne

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
