Re: Anyone doing saliva hormone levels? Bio-identical hormone treatment?

I'll tell you a true story. I just spent time with someone who treats hormone deficiency and sexual dysfunction. A patient wanted to be on Bio-identical HRT. She was on Climera patches. She was switched to the bio-identical estradiol patch, Vivelle. Estradiol to estradiol. Paid cash for the honor of being switched. This bio-identical deal is the biggest gimmick, least meritous medical movement I have ever seen, and patients are paying cash for it. It must be a blond thing.

Personally, I don't advocate the use. No real data to support it's use either the "bioidentical hormones" or the salivary testing.

Perhaps this is an old topic, but I am interested in everyone's opinion about the "bioidentical hormone" issues raised by the famous gynecologist, Suzanne Sommers. Isn't Prometrium, and topical estradiol "bioidentical"? I have had another wave of patients requesting testing and treatments. Many are going out of state for these tests and returning with treatments that I would have given them at their annual visit....I just don't call it "bio-identical". It wasn't something we used in my residency and I'm wondering if there isn't something useful to it as so many of my patients are spending a great deal of time, money and research efforts on this method of treatment for PMS and perimenopause...
