Lynn,
I recently moved from a hospital with 13 LDRPs delivering 250 babies a month
to one where there are 19 LDR's and 20 postpartum rooms delivering 350-400
babies per month. I would agree that the trend toward LDR is the right move
for many reasons... if you have the space.
In the smaller facility, it was a continual problem to have to move LDRP
patients when there was a need for a delivery bed. Because all of the OBGYN
nursing resources were concentrated in the LDRP area, when patients had to
be sent to another unit or another floor after delivery, often the
postpartum mother and baby didn't get the proper attention or advice...ie.
breastfeeding help was one big problem.
Plus we frequently had to move people at odd hours whenever there was a
crush of new laboring patients...very inconvenient and disappointing for the
couplets having to move at 3:00am.
It's much better to plan to move the patients to a postpartum area in a
controlled way. The postpartum area can be just as nice and with all the
right resources available.
