We try to do the same, i.e. let the hospital eat the deductible.

Richard, absent emergent, absolutely necessary surgery, I would have also cancelled the case.

If your car is in the shop, they don't give you the keys until you pay. Similary, if they don't pay before the surgery or the baby is born. . .
