Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy

Recently I have had numerous women inquiring about Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). Since I'm working and unable to watch OPRAH, I seem to know less than my patients! AND, they find it shameful that as a midwife, I don't know about it! Frankly, I've been selectively tuning out anything that I hear of lately that has to do with hormones! Does anyone have any experience with BHRT, or know of any "reliable" literature? Has anyone had any difficulty with compounding pharmacies. Does this pose any different risk to us as compared to prescribing traditional HRT (obviously after thorough counseling)? I tell you, we've had several calls recently regarding the lawsuits for taking HRT and it makes me sick. I even hate reading the paper anymore because I see the ad everyday. It makes me want to remove this component of care from my pratice. But alas, I'm a midwife and we are "With woman...For a lifetime of care". Besides, it seems that as everyone throws out their PremPro, they'll be running to this soon and "I don't know" doesn't seem to b a suitable answer aymore. Thanks for any info you can provide.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
