Re: Teenage patientFrom: ainsron (ainsron@sbcglobal.net)Sat Apr 24 17:11:52 2004
That reminds me of the patient saw last year, 15 years old, very permissive mother. Her mother was concerned because her daughter had low libido, she wasn't sexually active and didn't masturbate enough. I told the mother that was not a major concern at her age and children mature differently in many ways. She wasn't satisified with my answer and attitude and is currently seeing a midwife for gyn care. The midwife told me last week that the mother felt my personal moral and religious attitudes didn't prevented me from helping her daughter with her "problem." The interesting thing to me is that the daughter did not see it as a problem, only the mother Ronald E. During the course of our conversation I enquired of her,matter-of-factly, whether her parent/parents were aware of her sexual activity. I did this because we see lots of sexually-active teenagers and have found that family ties are stronger if the young folk are open about their "adult behaviors" with their parents. I was certainly glad that she was taking birth control measures and using condoms. She got her prescription. At check-out she informed my receptionist that she was not coming back because of my "attitude" . Maybe my approach seemed judgmental, but it wasn't intended to be.In my experience, the enquiry regarding parental knowledge usually allows the patient to open up about reasons for early sexual activity, etc. So....maye next time I'll keep just my mouth shut and write that prescription for the 14, 13, 12 year old? The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
