Dr. Ainsworth,

I think that this woman will slowly return to a normal voiding function. I see all cases of postpartum urinary retention occurring in my hospital and I don't remember any patient who developed "life-long" urinary retention following an operative delivery. We also had had occasional women with bladder overdistention of such entity. I usually recommend to continue intermittent self-catheterization and to be patient. Bethanechol could be tried, but I personally don't think it could help. Don't use a permanent Foley catheter.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
