Re: OB NEC and breastfeedingFrom: Garry E. Siegel, M.D. (garrys@mindspring.com)Wed Apr 14 11:40:55 2004
No, but I have heard of: 1. Antibiotic associated colitis in a newborn, presumably due to transmission via the breast milk from the prophylactic dose of cephalosporin at C/S after cord clamping. 2. One neonatologist, citing European studies, holds the breast milk in the freezer from the mom of premies (32 weeks and under) until mom can be tested for CMV IgM and IgG, with the thought of NOT using the milk if CMV IgM positive. The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
