Ovarian Function - New Study

NPR had a piece on a new study being published from Mass General Hospital by Jonathan Tilley regarding reproductive function in mice. They studied the depletion of follicles in a mouse model and found that at any given time, 1/3 of the follicles were dying. At that rate, the mouse would lose all of its follicles within two weeks. Instead, they know that the mouse ovary lasts for about 12 months. They looked further at this disparate finding and found that new follicles are being regenerated from stem cells within the ovary. Interestingly, scientists have known for some time that fruit flies are constantly regenerating follicles. Extrapolating from those studies, researchers suggests that the concept that humans or other mammals are "born" with all of their eggs and they gradually die off over one's reproductive life is a myth, not reality. Brings out all kinds of possiblities for infertility treatment in premature menopause, cancer patients, etc. Its amazing that no one had ever looked into this before, we just accepted it as gospel, much like the concept that "the world is flat!"
