postpartum urticaria

Since the delivery of my first child in feb 2002, I have had horrible difficulty with cold urticaria. 2 or 3 weeks after the birth of my second child 2 mos ago, I have developed a papular, pruritic rash worse on my trunk and extremities. Thinking it might be a drug reaction, I discontinued my progesterone-only OC's - the rash has improved but still persists. I also have washed my clothes in Dreft - double-rinse with no fabric softener - without any improvement. The cold urticaria is also much worse than it has ever been, and is unresponsive to antihistamines. I assume that this pruritic rash and urticaria are related to postpartum hormone levels, but I was wondering if you have come across this phenomenon, and if so, how long you expect it to last. Could severe cold urticaria like this suggest a connective-tissue disorder, etc.?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
