Delivery by 'uncredentialed' providerFrom: Dr. Ainsworth (ainsron@sbcglobal.net)Tue Oct 14 23:54:48 2003
I backup up a group of CNMs who deliver only in the hospital. The daughter of another CNM who is no longer practicing, but works per diem in our hospital as an RN was followed in labor by my group of CNMs. The retired CNM was asked to work as the labor RN for her daughter, because the unit was understaffed when she came to the hospital in active labor. She was allowed by my CNM to do her daughter's delivery which was a very uncomplicated water birth. Another CNM, who works for one of the other Obs was upset when she heard about it and filed an incident report, which I now have to address, because I am chief of OB. Her complaint is that an uncredentialed individual should not be allowed to deliver in the hospital because of liability concerns. My feeling is that it a crock of S***, even though this individual is not credentialed in our hospital for deliveries, she is very qualified and was supervised by a credentialed individual. I have a hard time getting excited about the liability issues when a mother delivers her daughter, by request. I've allowed father's to deliver with me present and backing them up, and I think that is perfectly within normal limits. What do you think?

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
