Re: Post Partum IUD insertionFrom: Braun, R. Daniel (rbraun@iupui.edu)Tue Sep 16 06:30:02 2003
I have put them in on the delivery table immediately after delivery of the placenta. There used to be a special device for this. It was called the "LEM"(Lunar Excursion Module) because it looked like one. About a 50% expulsion rate. Since we only had a 25% return rate for PP Visits we felt we were still ahead of the game. When I was in Ecuador this summer, doing a gyn/FP/primary care clinic, there were two young women who wanted IUDs. They were 14 and 15. One was 11 days PP, and I think the other was 3 weeks PP, or thereabouts. Both were breast feeding. In the US I would not even consider inserting an IUD prior to 6 weeks, but these young women didn't have many options. The other midwife and I hemmed and hawed about the R/B/A, but decided not to do it. I'm not sure whether we made the right decision or not.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
