Joanne--

I agree that sometimes having the husband/partner look over your shoulder during pelvic exams and pap smears is uncomfortable for me too.

Even more difficult for me is when the patient's father or father-in-law is present. Frequently I have had patients in L&D who have "no problem" with their father being present for the birth and all exams during labor. Several years ago I had a patient whose father sat on the bed for the entire 2 hr. second stage.

Most recently I have had a patient (teenager) whose parents say they must be with her all the time--she apparently has a phobia about being separated from them--their words. According to them, they even go on all her dates with her. I didn't ask if they watched their teen daughter have sex and get pregnant by her boyfriend.

I try hard to remember that this is their baby, their body--and not be too judgemental, but it is very hard to separate my own feelings of discomfort.

The American Medical Association is no longer designating CME hours for AMA Category II CME credit. However, physicians themselves may self designate learning activities as Category II CME credit hours if they feel it is of sufficient educational merit and meets the formal definitions of continuing medical education. OBGYN.net believes these interaction in this forum meets these criteria. For further information see the AMA web site.
