Re: Preparation for Lupron?

Hi Shannen,

I am doing Lupron for the second time and have never had any tests prior to starting it. If you have other health issues, you might want to talk them over with both your OB/GYN and primary care doctor. I have high cholesterol and Lupron can make your LDL (bad cholesterol) levels go up while on it, so I have just let my primary care Doc know I am on it and that my cholesterol may test higher than normal because of Lupron. I know some women who also get bone density tests before and after. I haven't but want to ask about getting one after this round is over just to be sure.

For me, it works great and is like a miracle drug, so I am one of the lucky ones. The first time I took it, I would get a bad migraine and get nauseous for about 36-48 hours after the shot, so I would just get them on a Friday so I had the weekend to recover. This round, I have not experienced that. I do get very sore at the injection site, to the point of limping for several days, so I just mentally prepare for that part. Since i do well on it, I take the three month injection, which is just more convenient and I don't fight the sore hip every month. I also know that within a week or so of first starting the injections, I will have one whopper of a period. For that, I just stock up on Advil and ThermaCare menstrual patches, and of course, tampons! (ha ha!). For me, after that period is over, I feel wonderful and the pain is gone. I do not bleed or anything. The hot flashes and night sweats do start within a week or so for me. Other than that, and some mood swings once in awhile, I do not have any other issues. I tend to stay pain free for a year or better after stopping.

Hope this helps a little! Everyone is different so you really won't know how you react until you do it. I hope you are also one of the lucky ones who does well and gets some relief. If you want to talk more about it, feel free to email me at ameyer@dbllaw.com

Hugs! Amy Meyer
