Donna: I don't know what state you live in but the following website might be helpful: http://www.docboard.org/index.htm This site lists participating state medical licensing authorities who provide on-line information about licensed physicians. I live in Texas and my state has on-line biographical(including education and specialties)information on every licensed physician. The bottom line of each listing states whether there are any disciplinary actions on file. If there is such an action you "probably" can request the relevant information under the Freedom of Information Act for a fee. Additionally, a check of the civil court records (either on-line if the physician practices in a progressive county or manually if not) under the physician's name could give you an idea of whether any malpractice suits have been filed against the physician. There was an effort in Texas to make this information available free of charge on-line but it didn't pass during the last legislative session. Your state may be more enlightened in that respect. Have you tried a web search under your physician's name? All sorts of information might pop up. If he/she has a web site their CV might be on it and that can give you an idea of his or her experience. I also think the things Janet Benedict mentioned in her reply to you are excellent ways to find out about your physicians qualifications and experiences. One other website you might check out is: http://www.womenssurgerygroup.com This is a website of 13 physicians located all over the world who specialize in micro-surgery for various gynecological conditions. If none of the listed physicians is in your area you might try e-mailing the group and requesting a referral of a physician in your area. It is always a good idea to check up on your surgeon beforehand and to get several opinions before any surgery. When my first gynecologist recommended a hysterectomy I got a second opinion and my second gynecologist gave me a very candid different opinion about my first gynecologist's recommendation. I went with the second opinion and have had no regrets. Good luck with your upcoming lap! Anne
