Hi Debbie, still catching up on some posts. I was diagnosed with IBS several years ago, your symptoms sound like they could be IBS. With this, its normal to have cycles of regular then not reg bm's. I don't use any meds anymore, avoiding alcohol, caffeine, spicy foods, stress (HAHAHA) help, so does eating lots of fibre, avoiding tight clothes on the abdomen, and lots of fluids. You should definitely talk to your doc about having a upper GI done as well as a barium enema to find out what exactly is going on.
