Absolutely DevastatedFrom: Christine (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Feb 19 21:53:51 1999
Hi Everyone: It's midnight, I just came home from work and was looking forward to reading my mail which arrived today after I had left. There was a letter from my gyn office. I thought it was a reminder of my annual visit, which is coming up. Instead it was a notice telling all his patients that he was just diagnosed with metastatic cancer and would no longer be continuing his clinical practice. Not only does the seriousness of his condition sadden me, I was looking forward to my annual exam. He had done a lap on me in March 1998 and when the problem reoccurred in Sept 1998, instead of consulting him, I asked to consult a general surgeon instead. I did this because it was not really a gyn problem the first time and I *thought* that was the case the second time. (I was partly right). I *thought* he would not be interested. The general surgeon would not do the second lap without first consulting the gyn, which he did. Well, the day of the second lap who appears at my side before I go into the OR? Yup, my gyn. He was going to observe. I felt like a heel and made a mental note that I would explain to him why I went to another doctor. Throughout the fall I thought of writing him a little note, explaining, but I kept thinking, Oh, I'll tell him in the Spring. Just the other day I told a friend on the phone (who was asking for the name of a gyn) that I knew my gyn would be retiring soon (he's in his late 60's) but I thought he'd be around a few more years. Then I added, I wouldn't know WHO to go to when the time comes to pick a new gyn. (Of course I had forgotten that I was just a little irked that he took so long to do the lap) I have seen this man for 20 years! The title of my post says it all. UGHHH. Chris S.
