The International Pelvic Pain Society - Chronic pelvic pain affects millions of women. However, new surgical and medical therapies are available which may offer hope for women suffering from chronic pelvic pain. The International Pelvic Pain Society was incorporated to allow physicians, psychologists, physical therapists and basic scientists to coordinate, collect and apply this growing body of information, and to serve as a forum for professional and public education. In doing this, we hope to be able to provide more relief and a more normal lifestyle for our patients. http://www.pelvicpain.org

Be sure to read: "Does Endometriosis Always Cause Pain?" By: Frederick Robert Jelovsek, M.D., M.S. Pelvic pain is estimated to be responsible for almost 25% of gynecology visits. When a laparoscopy is performed and mild or minimal endometriosis is found, doctors and patients alike may attribute the pain to the endometriosis when in fact, the endometriosis is asymptomatic and not the cause of the pain. We know that up to 15% of women may have endometriosis without having any pain symptoms. How then, do we determine when endometriosis is present, whether it is the cause of pelvic pain so we can stop looking for another cause? http://www.obgyn.net/endo/articles/jelovsek02.htm

And: Chronic Pelvic Pain: Current Concepts in the Evaluation and Management of a Common Gynecologic Problem David Blair Toub, M.D. Chronic pelvic pain affects a large number of women, and is not often optimally treated within a single specialty. It is responsible for approximately 40% of laparoscopies and 10-15% of hysterectomies in this country. In one survey of 5300 women, more than 16% noted chronic pelvic pain. In many cases, patients are evaluated by different physicians and undergo multiple operations without success. In these cases a multidisciplinary approach is appropriate.... http://www.obgyn.net/endo/articles/cpp-lect.htm
