Hi Susan: A hysterectomy does not necessarily follow a diagnosis of endometriosis. In fact, hysterectomy is NOT a cure for endo! Although it might *help* some women, it is not reliable. Unless the implants are removed, the endo can continue and depending on where it is located, cause problems. Endo feeds on estrogen, so removing the ovaries should help. However, there are all kinds of theories on where endo gets its estrogen, so even that might not help completely in some women. My gyn told me he operated on a 70 year old woman, who you would think would be long past menopause, and found endometriomas on her ovaries!!! I don't think there is any connection between endo, hysterectomy, and ovarian cancer. I know one young woman diagnosed with ovarian cancer who had the ovary removed, had two children, and then had a hysterectomy.(and probably the other ovary removed) I'm sure it depends on the situation, type of cancer, etc. Chris S.
