Re: Surgery cancelled; allergy?From: kim (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Dec 30 19:26:23 1998
Tiina, I am allergic to many pain meds..Codiene/oxycodiene/morphine a few others.. I was confused in the beginning because I had taken these pain meds before, but they told me an allergic reaction is usually something that builds up in your system.i took the codiene before was fine, next time i had some mild itching..so they said ok we will switch to oxycodiene its in the family of codiene but usually you won't have a reaction to both..Wrong..this time I has sent to the hospital in a full anphalexic shock think i spelled that one wrong..severe reaction.I swelled from head to toe..including my throat..it was very scary.i was being jabbed and shot with so many needles it too quite some time before they were able to bring it all under control..So from then on I became very cautious with meds..I had an epidural with c-section of my daughter.was fine..had an epidural with my son another c-section.this time the pain med mixed with it was morphine. And during the c-section I started having a terrible reaction.they had to pull the epi out during the or,start pumping me with the steriod and what ever, and demerol for pain..it was horrible by the time they were closing me I could feel them..So now the only pain meds they will dare to give me is the demerol..thats why many people ask why I have been taking demerol for 3 years that is a strong pain meds..unfortunately the stupid stuff isn't even working well anymore, but I can't take anything else, and they fear to even try anything else because I have built up so many reactions to pain meds they fear the next time could kill me..ok works for me stay on the demerol..So guess the question is yes i have had a reaction to meds.. I am sorry your surgery got cancelled.I have a few cancelled right before they were suppose to start. And you have you have to work yourself up mentally for the surgery then someone calls and says sorry we have cancel..You want to jump through the phone and strangle them. I do know what you mean about the nurse,I think thats a normal reaction.people tend to tell you their problems too.Not sure if they are trying to tell you them in hopes to make you feel better or just need to let it out themselves..see told you mine earlier.. I could give you many stories where I have had people go on and on too about something that happened to them, that was in some way happening to me..And your right you don't always want to hear it..You have enough that you are trying to deal with..but anyways..sorry sweetie..hang tough.. kimmi Women and Children First http://members.tripod.com/~ibkimmi/ Daveinma@ix.netcom.com Join our webring Women and Children http://members.tripod.com/~ibkimmi/page19.html Join our New webring Lean On Me http://members.tripod.com/~ibkimmi/page27.html Our New Magical Christmas Place http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/2308/
