frustrating?From: Christine (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Dec 30 06:33:58 1998
I have to share this story with you. I work on a medical floor in a teaching hospital. One day a man about 50 yrs of age is admitted complaining of abdominal pain. He had had an appendectomy 6 months prior and over the past few months he was being treated for a rheumatologic disorder by a rheumatologist for pain in his thighs. Now the pain was worse and he also had abdominal pain requiring morphine. They didn't have any idea what was wrong with him. I read some of the doctors notes "most unusual." Ct Scan (done twice) was negative. One evening his abdomen is hard as a rock and he is vomiting. This resolves after a few hours. All of this went on for a few days. Although the doctors notes did mention "adhesions" as a possibility, it did not seem to be a serious consideration. The next time I came into work I saw that he had gone to the OR and then transferred to a surgical floor. I guess they changed their minds? I still think about this poor guy and wonder about the outcome of the surgery. Chris S.
