Dear Dorothy, First of all, I will pray for you! My doctor would not tell me exactly what was wrong until he did a laparoscopy/hysteroscopy. I know that every doctor is different. The questions brought up in "The Endometriosis Sourcebook" seem pretty good. I would assume that with large cysts that an operation is planned. Find out what kind, what kinds of equipment is going to be used including what surgical tools. If an operation is not planned, find out why. That might be grounds for requesting another doctor right off. Also, they should be able to do a laparoscopy instead of a laparotomy, unless there is a problem.

If they are only going to do a "diagnostic" surgery, it will just be the stress of surgery without doing anything to fix anything. So, Find out if the doctor plans to try to get it all, or if the doctor might leave some if it is difficult to operate on. Will the doctor be consulting with a general surgeon capable of bowel resectioning if that is needed? Will you have a bowel prep (emptying the bowel over a few days before the operation) so that in case there is a rupture you will be safe? Is the doctor prepared to look around everywhere for the endo?

There is a suggestion that magnification and close ups be done. Ask what endo looks like. There are various colors of endo cells including (I think) clear, which are hard to see, yellow, red, and black like a powder burn. If the doctor doesn't recognize endo, the doctor won't remove it.

To prevent adhesions, do YOU have the feeling that your doctor is gentle when examining you? Is there anything the doctor will do to prevent adhesions?

Is there careful follow-up after surgery? Is there somebody to call in case there is a problem?

READ the chapter in "The Endometriosis Sourcebook" on surgery. It will explain what is possible, and what you should expect, and give suggestions about questions to ask. Elizabeth
