Re: SHARING A SUCCESSFUL HYSTERECTOMY STORYFrom: Dee (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Nov 30 13:43:19 1998
Heather: Thanks for your note. As for my experience with Delestrogen, I have NOTHING bad to say about it. I have experienced absolutely no side effects whatsoever. How I came to begin getting the shots is that neither the Premarin nor the patches controlled the horrible hot flashes I was having. After about 5 months, my doctor suggested trying Delestrogen. At first, I was getting 1 cc once per month but after several months, I noticed that I would start getting minor hot flashes towards the end of the month, about a week before the shot was due -- this was especially true if my month had been particularly stressful. So, he then explained to me that recent evidence suggested that the body might be able to handle the dose split in half and given twice per month. Since that time, I've had no hot flashes, no weight gain (other than minor stuff, especially during this time of year!) and no other side effects. The liquid itself is very thick and sort of stings going in, but that's the least of my worries, you know? As a side note, based on conversations with my family doctor and my new GYN, Delestrogen is not usually considered as a first line therapy attempt. Whenever this comes up in conversations, I am questioned about why I'm not on Premarin or patches, etc., but generally once I explain that steps were taken one by one to get to where I am today, they're okay with it. Since you've already had trouble with Premarin, that probably already rules out them trying that first. I wish you all the best in getting regulated, Heather. For me, I feel almost like it's my "magic potion" which keeps my life on an even keel! As a hysterectomy patient myself (3 weeks post-op), I appreciated reading it and know that others do as well. <<I now get a shot of 1/2cc of Delestrogen every two weeks>> I'm interested in learning more about Delestrogen...did/do you have any side effects from the injections that are common with other estrogen replacements, such as weight gain, etc.? I will not be going on HRT for another 5 months but would like to have some options to discuss w/my GYN...I do very badly on Premarin, as evidenced through my history with it while on Lupron. <<Another thing I also feel I need to share is the fact that my symptoms were not all physical.>> Absolutely - being "sick" takes it's toll on us both physically as well as mentally and in order to treat Endo completely, one must address the whole patient. <<He indicated we may go down in the history books because: 1) it's not known to run in families; and 2) he'd never seen such a dramatic improvement of the mental symptoms before in his practice.>> He may be very mistaken. Many Endo experts throughout the world believe there is indeed a genetic link in Endo patients. You may interested in learning more about the Oxegene Study regarding genetic Endo here at this URL... http://www.medicine.ox.ac.uk/ndog/oxegene/oxegene.htm (OXEGENE is a world-wide research study which aims to find genes responsible for causing Endometriosis. The study is based at the Nuffield Department of Obstetrics & Gynaecology in the University of Oxford.) And as for your mental symptoms improving, certainly if one is out of pain and feeling better overall, her mental status will improve as well! Thank you again for sharing your story. I wish you good health!
