Mrs. Clinton/NICHD responding to Endo Awareness RequestsFrom: Coordinator (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Nov 30 10:37:30 1998
I thought everyone might be interested in reading a letter I received via snail mail today from the Director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development... "Dear Heather: Your recent email to First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton, regarding facilitating awareness for endometriosis, has been referred to this Institute for reply. The NICHD is that part of the National Institutes of Health with primary responsibility for conducting and supporting basic and clinical research in the biomedical, behavioral and social sciences relating to child and maternal health, in medical rehabilitation, and in the reproductive sciences such as reproductive biology. As you know, endometriosis is a common, yet poorly understood disease. While some women with endometriosis may have severe pelvic pain, others who have the condition have no symptoms. Nothing about endometriosis is simple, and there are no absolute cures. The disease can affect a woman's whole existence--her ability to work, her ability to reproduce, and her relationship with her mate, child and everyone around her. As part of NICHD's mandate in the reproductive sciences, NICHD has established a Reproductive Medicine Network linking several institutions across the country. While this cooperative effort focuses on other important issues such as infertility and various male and female reproductive disorders, developing an optimal treatment for endometriosis is one of its primary goals. Gradually, scientists will identify the mechanisms behind this most enigmatic of gynecologic diseases. Enclosed is a copy of our brochure, Facts About Endometriosis, which we distribute in quantity free of charge. If you wish, you may order this form from us for your dissemination by contacting our clearinghouse. I have enclosed a description of the NICHD Clearinghouse that contains instructions on how to contact them. Sincerely yours, Duane Alexander, MD Director" The brochure is good, and has most of the info that is contained on their website, which I'm sure many of you are familiar with. The info to contact the Clearinghouse if anyone else is interested is 800/370-2943; at URL http://www.nih.gov/nichd or snail mail at NICHD Clearinghouse, PO Box 3006, Rockville, MD 20847. The National Institutes of Health themselves are located at NIH, Bldg. 31, Room 2A03, 31 Center Dr. MSC - 2425, Bethesda, Maryland, 20892. The phone # is 301/496-3454. I am delighted to see that someone out there is paying attention and I hope that the work the Institute is doing will pay off for all of us very soon!
