Re: Depo-provera injectionsFrom: Lee (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Nov 30 10:15:11 1998
Ann, this is a copy of a message I posted back in Sept. about Depo Provera, when we had a similar thread going. You might want to go back and check for other responses from that time frame. I was on Depo Provera for about 18 months in 1991-1992. I hated it!!! It gave me horrible mood swings, serious depression, angry outbursts, and worst for me, I gained 30 pounds on my small 4'11" frame (20 of which I have been unable to lose six years later, despite exercising and dieting). After having my periods suppressed for 18 months by the DP, my first one prompted a chronic yeast infection that plagued me for two additional years. I did everything to get rid of it (prescriptions from the gyno, vaious natural - and unnatural!- douches, garlic, you name it). It didn't stop until after I completely quit sugar, white flour, caffeine, and alchol, and became celibate for about 6 months. I was on DP back before it was approved as birth control - at that time, the FDA had only approved it for treatment of endo and I think a couple of other diseases. The gyno I switched to after that said that yeast infections weren't listed as a side effect, but she thought they should be b/c a lot of her patients on DP were getting them when their periods resumed. Despite all of this, my endo was actually WORSE while I was on the DP. I had more pain and more problems while on the DP than I had had before. While I didn't have debilitating periods, I ended up with chronic medium-grade pain that left me exhausted and sick all of the time. I've heard of other women who've had this problem too, but I don't have any hard data about it. My experience with DP made me really evaluate how I was treating and approaching this disease. Some things just aren't worth the benefit - and in this case, the DP may have made it worse. But as we know, everyone reacts differently to the various treatments. ******** At Tue, 24 Nov 1998, Ann wrote: Hi all, I would appreciate anyones's comments on their experience with depo-provera. My doctor has recommended that I begin these injections because other forms of bcp's had not reduced the severity of my cramps. I have already had laparoscopy and a laparotomy. Any problems I should be aware of? Thanks very much in advance for any advice you provide.
