Re: ANY LUCK WITH LAPAROTOMY?

While adhesions could result more from a laparotomy, it is not always the case. The amount of adhesions depends on the skill of the surgeon as well. A doc who is careless inside, can cause more damage, EVEN when doing surgery via laparoscopy. I've had both, 3 scopes and 1 laparotomy, and I've no more adhesions after my lapartomy than after my 3 scopes. Also if your doc is up to date and using the latest in adhesion prevention, you are less likely to have as many. Dr. Cook from the Omega Institute does the laparotomy by choice because he can in fact see better, but he ALSO uses a microscopic lens to find the microscopic endo. While some docs do use just their eyes, some of the specialists do use the combination of open surgery with the eyes and the microscopic lens for magnification. I know Dr. Cook does it this way. My last surgery gave me 4 incisions, and I personally feel I have just as much chance at getting adhesions in FOUR places now, rather than one long incision. Dr. Cook favors the laparotomy because he can indeed SEE better. He can get to other areas that when using a scope you can't.... Ureters, liver, well all over.... Yes recovery is longer, but if you SAW more than you REMOVED more, and to me that is worth the extra healing time. Careful surgeons have been found to cause much less adhesions. It's the trauma to the tissue that causes the adhesions, and that really doesn't depend on only the initial incision. I'm going to have the laparotomy done again as soon as I can get to Omega, to me it's worth it to have a specialist do the surgery and do it right. He uses the most up to date adhesion barriers and techniques, so I trust I'll have no more adhesions than with other surgeries and most likely even less. It's a personal choice to make though and I leave you with my opinion ! Painfree wishes.
