Re: Pre/Post Op - what you can doFrom: anonymous@obgyn.netWed Aug 26 16:50:06 1998
you can also learn about wound healing from a nurse who is a wound care specialist. that is my field. i am writing a book on coping with endo for Avery Publishing who is the same publisher as for Prescriptives for Nutritional healing. they also have one on healing teas that i am ordering. there is a product called a wound hydrogel made by several medical companies. it is available at a medical supply store and a hospital should also have it. doctors do not pay attention to wounds, surgeons just cut. i told my surgeon that i would take care of my wound. i did not have external staples or sutures, because i discussed my preferences with him in advance. even with staples or sutures you can use the hydrogel. it significantly reduces scarring and facilitates healing. i used it for about 6 months post op to keep the suture line soft and supple. it also stops itching when you are healing. such a simple thing and so many overlook it. zinc also enhances wound healing. i took it briefly. good diet and lots of vitamins, exercise and especially getting yourself well hydrated before surgery will help you recover much faster. i really pumped water and healthy fluids in advance. the week before my surgery i was in Seattle and SanFran on business. each day i walked at least 5 miles up and down hills to get myself in the best shape since i knew exercise would be on hold for a long time.
