Re: Am I developing endometriosis at 15?

Unfortunately, a laparascopy is the only way to diagnose endometriosis. Ultrasounds and/or even MRI's cannot pick up endo, although it has happened in severe cases. Ideally you want a doctor who is an endometriosis expert, who knows what to look for when he does the lap.  Endo comes in a variety of colors (even clear) and can be easy to miss if the doctor does not know what s/he is looking for. Here are a list of specialists, and you can look at their websites and learn more about their techniques and experience:

Dr. Cook in CA http://www.pelvicpain.com/ Dr. Lyons in Georgia http://www.thomasllyons.com/procedures.htm Dr. Robbins in Maine http://www.endoexcision.com/ Dr. Liu in TN http://www.gyndr.com/ and Dr. Redwine http://www.endometriosistreatment.org/

There are two doctors, Dr. Orbuch and Dr. Seckin, who are in NYC and specialize in endo.  You can check them out at ratemds.com.

You may also want to check out the Endometriosis Association. They require a membership fee to join, but you can order books and other information without joining. You can check it out here: http://www.endometriosisassn.org/

I would discharge thing too.  It is not uncommon to have a clear discharge throughout the month (I myself have had this 'issue' since I was 15, so I know it can be embarrassing).  It is called Leukorrhea.  There is no problem if it is clear and not smelly.

However, if the discharge is smelly and a funny color (other than clear or creamy looking), it can mean you have an infection or other problem. It sounds very much like a yeast infection, (candida albicans) but only a doctor can diagnose this.

I would not recommend douching as this can only make the situation worse.

Perhaps an endo expert would be able to tell you more about what is going on.

Have you ever tried the over the counter vaginal yeast infection test? This can tell you whether you have an infection or not.

By the way, a yeast infection is not serious and has nothing to do with sex or std's.  I had a yeast infection when I was 17 and a virgin.  You also don't get it from toilet seats.

It can be cleared up with antibiotics and over the counter medicines, such as Monistat.  You should definitely be tested for a yeast infection by a doctor though, before you use the otc products.

You may have to watch your diet as the yeast infections can be exacerbated by certain foods.

You can go to this site to learn more about candida and which foods to avoid: http://www.thecandidadiet.com/foodstoavoid.htm

You can buy all cotton underwear, which is more breathable and better than nylon or other materials when it comes to candida (it thrives in a moist environment).  And avoid really tight jeans or pants which can also let candida grow quickly.

You can also use liners to prevent the heavy discharge from marking your underwear.  Just be sure to change it about every 5-6 hours or so.  Don't use the deodorized ones (this can make candida worse!), use only the unscented ones (that goes for pads too).  Avoid any kind of scented product for intimate use.

Hope this helps & you can find a doctor who will really help you! One thing though: Don't stop looking for a doc who w p you!! You may have to go through 12 doctors, but *don't give up!!* You need to get treated for the endo, it is real, not in your head, and don't let anyone tell you it is!
