''The Pill is Outdated

The Pill, which signaled the sexual revolution in the 1960s, is past its prime and leading to more unwanted pregnancies and abortions because so many women take it incorrectly, often missing several pills each month.

Instead of relying on the Pill, James Trussell of Princeton University, said women should use other methods of contraception that are longer-lasting such as hormonal implants or intrauterine devices (IUDs). They can be “fitted and forgotten,” but can easily be removed if the woman changes her mind and wishes to become pregnant. Many doctors do not offer the longer-acting contraceptives mainly because they have not been trained in how to administer them, so women turn to the Pill because they have little other choice.

“The Pill is an outdated method because it does not work well enough,” Trussell said. “It is very difficult for ordinary women to take a pill every single day. The beauty of the implant or the IUD is that you can forget about them.”

Studies indicate that women miss taking the Pill three times as often as they admit. While about half of women studied said they didn’t miss any, less than a third actually took a Pill each day.
