Re: apparently I misunderstood......From: Kristy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Nov 30 01:55:41 2007
Dana, In order for the statement "usually endo doesn't come back after a procedure" to be a fact that means the percentage of success on the part of the specialist who did the surgery would have to be at around 95% or higher. The fact that 20% or more of women like me who have had their endo recur is a very large number although yes compared to the success rate that is small. The reason that we don't hear more about the recurrence rate is because most of the women who went to the specialists to try and get help for their endo the first time did not go back for surgery the way they hoped. The reason is because when they told the doctor that they knew that their endo was back (and these were new implants) they were not believed. One of my friends saw the specialists in Atlanta and when she told him that the endo was back he wouldn't believe her but yet took her in to surgery and guess what he found. When my endo recurred in 1999 (and I had a different doctor at that time) the doctor I have now (who is a regular local OB/GYN in the Jacksonville, FL area who also knows a lot about endo) that doctor found that I also had endo growing on the back of my uterus and on the uterosacral ligaments. Because of the way my body deals with the endo (which is why it will eventually be shown that there is an autoimmune component to endo) I know for a fact I also have some sitting on my rectovaginal septum, maybe my bladder, and also the bowel itself (how I knew this part is because of the pictures from the surgery in 1999 and what the bowel looked like compared to the surgery in 2003 and again in 2006). My endo also causes me to have adhesions so I have a messy history with them in addition to my endo and other health issues. Even though there are women like me out there that continuously have recurrences in spite of what some believe I'm glad that you and others out there have found good doctors. It is very important that all of us have a good doctor to take care of us when it comes to our endo whether it's a regular local OB/GYN or a specialist. May you continue to do well.
