Re: Birth Control Pills for endoFrom: D (anonymous@obgyn.net)Wed Jul 18 11:23:46 2007
BCPs help some women with endo, but they usually wear off after awhile and the pain comes back. When my endo symptoms first got really bad I didn't have insurance, and without insurance or the cash to pay for surgery BCPs were about my only option (that I knew of at the time). I got relief with a pill called Levlen - it reduced my pain for a good 8 months before it started to wear off, and I continued to take it continuously (no break for placebos/period) for 2 years because I still felt better than I had before I started the pills. If I had to do it over again, I'd look into the bio-identical progesterone that's been discussed here a lot recently. You can stop your periods with that, too, and it's supposed to have a lot less side effects. You do have to find a doctor that will prescribe it for you, not all gyns are familiar with it. If you look back over Andrea's recent posts, in particular, you can find a lot of info. Have you had a laparoscopy? Really, I think the best solution is to find an endo specialist who can thoroughly excise the disease! Unfortunately, I know all too well how difficult it can be to get to a really good endo doctor... It took me over two years to get the right kind of insurance (PPO) and I'm finally having surgery (my 2nd lap) next week. I don't know if your symptoms are bad enough that you are considering surgery, but if you are I highly recommend seeking out an excision specialist - their results are much better than most obgyns. Hope this helps!
