Re: anyone improve with surgeryFrom: Nicole (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Jul 16 23:11:05 2007
A survey on endometriosis.org talks about the following results reguarding effectiveness of surgery: "SURGERY appears to be effective to some extent in 30% of the 5478 women, who had tried this treatment. However, two presentations in the pain and quality of life workshop indicated that if women are treated by surgeons specialising in endometriosis, these results were much more favourable, with up to 80% reporting an improvement in pain, sexual activity, and quality of life [3] and a cumulative pregnancy rate of 31%-70% from 1-4 years following laparoscopic excision of endometriosis [4]" The thing I am wondering is if you have had your surgery done with an expert, or a regular OB/GYN. Here's my experience; I had my first surgery done with an OB/GYN and felt worse after. After years of continuing pain and misery I decided to seek out an expert. The doctor I began seeing ONLY treated Endometriosis (this doctor did NOT practice Obstetrics or deliver babies) and this doctor had dedicated his career to treating Endo and had decades of experience in excising it and of laprascopic techniques. Now there is always a chance with every surgery that you will still have pain afterwards. But, I believe that it is imperative that the surgery be done by an expert with lots of experience. So many women are being operated on by doctors who are not at all qualified and so we end up hearing about all these horror stories with reguards to surgeries (hysterectomies, scarring, etc.) Whan actually the techniques perfected by expert Endo surgeons are upward of 80% effective and provide the longest lasting results. Note, I am not saying that surgery is for everyone...but the risks and benefits of all options should be considered. Here's the article I referenced earlier: http://www.endometriosis.org/press15september05.html And here's an article written by an Endo provider which talks about some of the issues surrounding Endo treatment and surgery.
