Re: what am I going to do??From: D (anonymous@obgyn.net)Tue Jun 26 11:34:42 2007
Hi Becky - I'm glad to hear you got an appointment with your doctor! I understand what you are saying about the pain - endo can be horribly painful and over-the-counter meds aren't always enough. One thing that you should be doing is keeping a pain diary, this can really help your doctors understand what you've been going through. All you need to do is write down how much it hurts, usually it's rated 1-10, 10 being the worst pain ever imaginable, and what meds you take or other things you do for relief and how well they work. Some people track what they eat, etc. - it's up to you how detailed you want to be. Please be careful with the OTC pain meds - make sure you aren't taking more than 4 grams of acetaminophen each day, that's only 8 500mg pills so it's easy to overdo it. More can damage your liver. Also the aleve and ibuprofen can be very hard on your stomach - don't take too much, always take it with food and you may want to take prilosec or some other acid reducer with it. I got two ulcers from taking naproxen and ibuprofen, and I had been taking them less than a year. If you start getting heartburn or stomach pain (I know it can be hard to tell what's what sometimes) talk to your doctor! Hot baths can help, heating pads can help - some women like the disposable ones you wear under clothes that activate when you open them. Some women find that cold works better than heat (or alternating bwtween them), so you may want to try ice packs, too. Ginger can help with nausea if that's a problem - ginger tea is good, or you can get crystallized ginger and chew that. You could also call the doctor and try to get in sooner, tell them you are in pain! If it's so bad you have to leave work, I would definitely make that call! I wish I had more suggestions for you - I know it can be very unpleasant. Hopefully your doctor will help you with some pain meds, etc. when you see them. If they don't want to treat the pain, you can look into seeing a pain management specialist. My doctors referred me to pain management in September and it's made a huge difference. Hope this helps!
