Re: Any one have panick attacks?From: Em (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat Jun 2 08:30:48 2007
Hi Angie Yep, I've suffered from panic attacks and high anxiety on and off for quite a while. Not much fun. Various techniques help. eg look at a watch and breathe in for four seconds, hold for two, out for four - do it for at least one minute. Or do things like puzzles, crosswords so that your brain concentrates elsewhere than on your physical symptoms. And do whatever other relaxing stuff you can to reduce your general anxiety. They key though really likes in thinking patterns. It is catastrophic thoughts and incessant worry that prompts the feelings, then its the fear of the feelings that causes the attacks. If we weren't scared of the sensations, the feelings would go away quicker. It can also help to try to feel compassion for yourself while the attack is occurring, and give yourself permission to feel fearful and anxious - because you're human! I'm still working on it but these techniques help. My attacks are triggered off by enclosed spaces so if I know I'm going to be taking a flight (and my general stress levels are high) I will usually take a small dose of a tranquiliser and have books and puzzles handy - that makes the whole thing bearable!
