Re: Question for Dr. DaiterFrom: Eric Daiter, MD (anonymous@obgyn.net)Sat Apr 28 18:18:10 2007
Yeast (that causes yeast infections) and bacteria (eg., gardnerella that causes bacterial vaginitis) normally colonize the vaginal tract and live harmoniously together. When you take antibiotics you can reduce or eliminate the bacteria so the yeast can run wild. When you eliminate the yeast with monostat or diflucan (anti yeast medications) the bacteria often run wild. I have used a simple warm water douche (just one... not daily or even weekly) to "even the playing field" if one gets out of hand so that the two agents can regrow naturally to recolonize the vaginal tract. Altering the PH has also been used often. I am not too sure about the hydrogen peroxide douche, as I have not used it in the past. A simple warm water douche if there is an itchy thick cottage cheesy discharge or monostat (over the counter) otherwise seems reasonable to start and if you get no relief, then see your gynecologist for advice on your exact situation. Good Luck
