Re: Lupron anyone?From: Amy (anonymous@obgyn.net)Fri Apr 13 08:58:20 2007
I read through some of the other posts to this before I responded. Glad you did your research as it is a controversial treatment. I have done Lupron twice now and had positive experiences both times. I am one of the lucky ones, and trust me, very grateful that I react well to it. It was a hard personal decision for me to make. In regards to my experience: I did have some of the listed side effects such as hot flashes and night sweats but that was about it. It definitely killed my sex drive but thank goodness I married a wonderful understanding man! I had a few mood swings the first time (I did the first course for 9 months, with add back therapy the last three months and then just six months the second time) but nothing major or scary, just felt like PMS. For me, the pain from the endo disappeared within a few weeks of starting the shots. I also lose weight while on Lupron, about 10 pounds or so that seems to be the water weight I gain from birth control as the pounds do come back on when the shots stop. Although the side effects could get annoying, for me it was worth it to not be in pain and have a "normal" life for awhile. Each time, the pain relief lasts for about a year or more after the shots stop. The second time I did Lupron in 2004-2005, the side effects were even less, almost like my body had built a tolerance or something. One of the worst things for me was the pain in the injection site. While the shot itself never bothered me or hurt, the muscle tenderness and pain at injection site is pretty bad for a couple days, to the point I kind of limp. Feels like the pain from a tetanus shot. Also, I tend to get a bad headache and kind of queasy for 24-48 hours after the injection. (I just started scheduling my shots on Friday afternoons so I had the weekend to deal with it.) The first time I did monthly shots for the first three months(to see how I would react to Lupron) and when it went well, I opted to then do the three month version for convenience and to not deal with the injection site pain as often. Sorry to ramble but you asked for some positive experiences. I know when I researched Lupron, I found mostly negative stories and was grateful for the positive ones others shared with me. It helps to hear some good too when you have made the decision. I came to a point that I felt I had to try it and that to be fair, I couldn't judge it or refuse to try it until I had first hand experience. If you want to talk more about it one-on-one, please feel free to email me direct. I don't want anyone to feel I am pushing this (this is such a touchy topic on the forum that I sometimes I am almost scared to say I had a good experience!), just giving my two cents. I wish everyone who tried it could have the experience I have had. Hugs and good luck! I hope you do well and it helps you. Amy Meyer
