Re: birth control & anti-depressantsFrom: Alyson (anonymous@obgyn.net)Mon Apr 2 15:23:45 2007
I'm on Loestrin and haven't had any of those problems. The Cymbalta is often prescribed to treat people with chronic pain conditions. Unfortunately one of the side effects is that it may keep you awake at night. I am also on Cymbalta for fibromyalgia. My reproductive endocrinologist initially put me on Elavil for the endo to help me sleep. It is also an anti depressant, but in small doses (I'm taking 25mg at night) functions as a sleep aid. I started feeling much more rested and did not got exhausted as easily. When I was diagnosed with the fibro, the rheumatologist put me on Cymbalta (30 mg, 2 pills at night). I went back to being exhausted again. So, we switched the Cymbalta to taking it in the morning instead of night, and I feel alot better. I don't really think it would be the Loestrin causing the sleepiness, but if you don't typically tolerate birth control very well it could contribute to the depression. I would start by talking to your doctor about changing the dosage time if you are taking the Cymbalta at night. If you are still having any difficulty sleeping or you feel tired it may be worth asking about the Elavil. Also ask the gyn about the depression. Especially if you have had any of those symptoms while on birth control previously. Alyson
